An organised day out with Tracey and Clara to North Yorkshire,to complete one of our favourite walks resulted in us having a great day out, despite the slightly misty and cloudy conditions to start the day.
We travelled the journey through the sleepy Yorkshire Wolds and up to the picturesque little village of Levisham to begin this lovely walk.
The first section up to Saltergate is along open moorland and can be a bit featureless, but the walk is broken up by some nice birds on most occasions and today was no exception, with 3 Wheatear and a couple of displaying Curlew adding to the moorland atmosphere with their lovely bubbling calls.
After Saltergate you walk into the valley which forms the Hole of Horcum as you carry on the walk back to Levisham and this section of the walk is always more productive bird wise and has some lovely scenery also, with some fantastic Wildflowers on show at this time of year.
Today the bird highlights went to a lovely singing male Cuckoo,6 singing male Redstart and my first Garden Warbler of the year.
A good selection of Wildflowers were again noted today and included Greater Stichwort,Early-purple Orchids,Wood Sorrel,Primrose,Wood Anemone,Wood Forget-me-Not,Lesser Celandine and Barren Strawberry.
While walking we also found a very smart Dor Beetle,a type of Dung Beetle of which i have seen here before on previous visits, their metallic undersides are amazingly colourfull, with a violet colouration.
After reaching the car again after our super walk we enjoyed some lovely food in the Horseshoe Inn before driving the short journey over to the lovely village of Thornton-le-Dale for a wander, before travelling home after another lovely day and walk. The Side Of The Hole of Horcum Some Lovely Views. Greater Stichwort. Wood Anemone. Lesser Celandine. Wood Sorrel.
