Messingham Birds & Insects,Saturday 7th May 2022.

Another visit today to this gem of a reserve, saw some great sightings being seen and a new species for myself for Lincolnshire in the form of 3 Crucifer Shield Bugs found along one of the footpaths.

The following is what i saw during the visit.

Because of the volume of species involved on today's visit,i have split them into families.

Birds

The main highlights seen on today's visit were 2 personal firsts for the year in the form of my first Garden Warblers(4 singing males) and Swifts(5).

It was really great to see these two species again, after what seemed like ages, both species being personal faves, particularly Garden Warblers with their subtle tones and lovely liquid song.

Other species seen included 4 Common Tern,5 singing male Cetti's Warblers,a lovely male Cuckoo and some great views watching a pair of Little Grebes nest building.

Syrphidae

Another excellent variation today, with some nice species seen including another Chalcosyrphus nemorum in another area of the reserve, different to the single insect i found on the 23rd April.Other species seen included several Cheilosia species - Variabilis,Bergenstammi/Fraterna,Albitarsus/Ranunculi,really not easy to separate in the field,Helophilus pendulus and my first Myathropa florea of the year.

Heteroptera

The highlight of the day came from this family when by chance i found 3 Crucifer Shieldbugs along one of the paths. This is the most northerly record of this species in Lincolnshire and the first i have seen away from the south coast.

Other members of the family recorded on today's visit included Parent Bug,Hawthorn Shieldbug and Green Shieldbug.

Coleoptera

Several species were seen today including my first Agapanthea villosoviridescens of the year along with a Wasp Beetle,Harlequin,14 spot and 7 spot Ladybirds,Chequered Click Beetle and Copper Greenclock.

Lepidoptera

A few nice moths seen today included 2 Clouded-bordered Brindle,,Angle Shades,Cinnabar,Garden Carpet,Green Longhorn and a lovely Mottled Umber Caterpillar and a Yellow Tail Caterpillar.

Butterflies seen included my first Brown Argus of the year and others recorded included, Green-veined White,Orange Tip,Peacock and Small Tortoiseshell.

What a cracking place, with so much on offer and still new species being found,it just goes to show what an important site it is.
