Windy Humber......Wednesday 09.08.2017.

A spare day today saw me heading to my WEBS count areas between Barrow Haven and Goxhill Haven in not great weather conditions to be fair, with a blustery northerly element to the wind and overcast conditions, but no rain thankfully.
The first count section at Barrow Haven revealed very little with only a calling Cetti's Warbler near to the Haven itself.
Section number two between Barrow Haven and New Holland bulk terminal, was again a bit thin on the ground with notable species, with the highlights consisting of 24 Pochard on Fairfield Pit and 5 Common Sandpipers roosting on the rocks at the outfall at high tide. The latter are always a joy to see with their teetering call and wing flicking flight.
After traversing a very busy bulk terminal, the final section between New Holland and Goxhill Haven was the most productive, with hundreds of gulls flying onto the Humber after feeding on a nearby ploughed field and i tried and tried to find something unusual, but i couldn't apart from some lovely, fresh juvvie Lesser-black backs and Common Gulls, both species being particular favourites.
The highlight of the morning was seen off here, when i picked up a pretty large flock of ducks flying in from the east, relatively high up and as they got nearer it was plain to see they were Common Scoters. They came nearer and as they reached the bulk terminal, did a couple of circuits before carrying on west gaining height all the time until they passed over the Humber bridge at a good few hundred feet above the middle of the bridge.
It was difficult to get an 100% accurate count due to the blustery wind, but i got to 175 birds before i gave up.This is a substantial count for the species here and my largest count i can remember seeing on the Humber,so was a very welcome sighting.
The return leg back towards Barrow Haven only revealed another Common Sandpiper, different to the earlier birds and a hand full of Swifts provided something other to look at rather than just waterbirds.
Not a bad few hours out and about, with at least 7 miles walked today.
